Rocktober 5: Steve Jobs, The Wizard

Everything about what I’m doing right now—and everyday—is influenced by Steve Jobs: hammering on a stainless keyboard, watching the crisp words appear on a Cinema Display, powered by a MacBook Pro with an iPhone tethered, writing the latest installment of bTunes, my blog’s music tag blatantly named after yet another Jobs creation.

The man was a wizard of the highest order. So on this day of his passing, I continue the 31 days of Rocktober with a fitting tribute: Sabbath’s 1970 song The Wizard is spare and stylistically timeless, just like everything Jobs created. And the song is about a wizard who uses his magic to bring joy to the masses. Yes, it’s also about the band’s drug dealer at the time, but that’s fitting too: the masses are hopelessly addicted to Jobs’ wares. As we should be. They’re magical, just like their creator. May he rest in peace.

Misty morning, clouds in the sky
Without warning, a wizard walks by
Casting his shadow, weaving his spell
Funny clothes, tinkling bell

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic

Evil power disappears
Demons worry when the wizard is near
He turns tears into joy
Everyone’s happy when the wizard walks by

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic

Sun is shining, clouds have gone by
All the people give a happy sigh
He has passed by, giving his sign
Left all the people feeling so fine

Never talking
Just keeps walking
spreading his magic
