THE BASIS POINT

Rocktober 27: Seven Nation Army | White Stripes

White Stripes fans will say I could go deeper for tonight’s Rocktober pick. But Seven Nation Army is as deep as it gets for me. The accidental super-hit with a main riff composed during a pre-show sound check. It won a 2004 best rock song Grammy, and became a soccer fan anthem worldwide. The title is what Jack White used to call Salvation Army when he was a kid, and the lyrics are about him getting into the proper zone to deal with fame and haters. As a writer, my favorite line comes last verse when he’s reached that zone: “All the words are gonna bleed from me / And I will think no more.” If that’s not Rock N Roll, I don’t know what is.
