Rocktober 10: Sleeping Giant – Mastodon

The 31 Days of Rocktober continues tonight with Mastodon. Sadly ‘the album’ is dead in the iTunes era, but Mastodon is an album band if there ever was one. Their hardness places them in the metal category. They’re often referred to as sludge metal — kind of a slower, evocative style — but their drummer Brann Dailor brings an almost jazz-like influence that’s also placed the band in the prog-rock category.

Think of Mastodon as Rush, but with balls.

And for those Rush fans who doubt … Nirvana founder/drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl called Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor the best drummer in the world a few years back.

Sleeping Giant, a 2006 song off their third album Blood Mountain, is dedicated to all of you out there who are waiting to do that giant thing you’ve been thinking or talking about for too long now. May this song help wake you up…
