Friday Funk: Cheeba Cheeba

Whether you celebrate today’s 4/20 holy high day or not, tonight’s Friday Funk installment will still do it’s weekly job of helping you get your cool back for the weekend. Cheeba Cheeba is airtight funky stoner rap from Tone Loc in his 1989 prime. It samples Maybe Your Baby from Stevie Wonder in his 1972 prime, so I’m also including that so you can see where Loc drew his inspiration. And as an added bonus, I’m also putting two covers of Maybe Your Baby, the first from Chaka Khan’s 1970s funk band Rufus, and also a live version from Prince. All three versions equally funky, yet totally different and original. Fun fact: Tone Loc’s album Loc’d After Dark that Cheeba Cheeba is from also includes other samples from Chaka Khan, so it’s all connected man. Far out. More on that some other time…
