THE BASIS POINT

Friday Funk: Loose Booty

Yesterday was Sly Stone’s 75th birthday, so obviously tonight’s Friday Funk installment is from his library. Going with Loose Booty from 1974, which Beastie Boys fans will recognize immediately because it’s heavily sampled on Shadrach from Paul’s Boutique in 1989. And the rabbit hole keeps going: turns out Loose Booty samples a small slice of Louis Armstrong’s 1931 song Shadrack. So even though Beasties didn’t sample Armstrong’s music on Shadrach, they do borrow the lyrical concept. So deep if you follow these matters. But even if you don’t, all three songs are below to help you get your cool back for the weekend. Enjoy.
