THE BASIS POINT

Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme’s advice for writers

The quote below is from an interview that Queens frontman Josh Homme did a few years ago. It’s a good reminder of what should motivate anyone who’s pursuing any type of creative activity, including writers and bloggers. The Entrepreneurial Industrial Complex constantly tells us that we must Monetize our endeavors, and as Josh points out, that’s expecting too much. If you’re a writer, you need to write for yourself and chase the enjoyment of it. That’s it. The rest will follow.

Q: If you could send one message out to emerging rock bands all over the world, what would it be?

A: My advice would be play for yourself because I always think that if you expect too much from music, if you expect anything from music, you expect too much. It seems like it would be really difficult to be in a band and just start from the beginning, unless you were playing with your friends just cause you loved it. And then it would be really easy to be in a rock n roll band because you’d have the only reason you need, which is to love it and just because you’re chasing the enjoyment of it. So I think any other beginning for music, especially for rock music, is tricky and is maybe not the best starting point.
