THE BASIS POINT

Rocktober song pick for Rob Chrisman, mortgage industry legend

Today’s Rocktober installment is for Rob Chrisman, perhaps the best mortgage writer out there today. He’s a former capital markets guy with a decades-long long resume at retail and wholesale lenders, and now is an industry consultant who writes every single day. There are execs in this business who won’t take a sip of coffee before reading Rob’s daily email. We had the opportunity to work together for a few years when he was with my firm, and lucky for me, he began contributing to The Basis Point when it began in January 2008.

I asked Rob to give me a song pick for The 31 Days of Rocktober, and he offered Ball and Chain, Social Distortion’s 1990 hit from their third album. It was the first album they didn’t finance themselves and their ticket to becoming household names. Here’s Rob on why he picked it:

Good beat. Edgy. They tour through SF once in a while. 4 guys just pounding it out. Good guitar solo. Odd that they’re playing electrical equipment in a puddle, though.

I’d only add that picking Ball and Chain is obviously some subconscious reference to his writing, from which he never strays. For that, Rob is a household name in the mortgage industry. And as those who know him personally can attest, one of the nicest guys around.
