THE BASIS POINT

Rocktober 1: For Those About To Rock

It’s time again for The 31 Days of Rocktober. I did it last year and lots of you have asked about it, so I’m doing it again.

October is kind of like New Year’s for me, where I reset and gather new inspiration. And given the year I’ve had, today couldn’t have come soon enough.

Not all Rocktober write-ups are market related. Some are simply to rock out, or to shout out friends.

So let’s get started with the basics, something market participants often forget.

This first song of Rocktober 2012, For Those About To Rock by AC/DC circa 1981, has an opening riff that gives me chills every time I hear it. It’s dedicated to @Real_Interloper, a finance guy who’s frequent rock musings make him a favorite of mine on Twitter. Here’s an AC/DC exchange we had last month:

His point is plain: AC/DC never gets old. They’ve relentlessly stuck to the basics since forming in 1973, including on their 15th album released in 2008, on which 4 of the 15 songs had “Rock” in the title. And in case you need proof that sticking to the basics works: AC/DC has sold more than 200 million albums, including 71 million in the U.S. alone.

So for Real_Interloper and for those about to follow Rocktober 2012, I salute you…
