THE BASIS POINT

Writing vs. Typing (and a picture of my kid)

Since a writing rough patch that ended September 17 with this self-motivational piece, I published at least one story per day until Saturday, November 12. I missed yesterday because I had my three-year-old on my own this weekend, and we had to play all day and night. One second in that timeframe shown below.

My wife got home from her trip last night and this morning I saw a book she picked up along the way: Insults Every Man Should Know. There’s even a section on insults between writers that leads into the quotes by saying “professional writers are as mean and petty as aspiring writers are pretentious and obnoxious.”

Funny and true. At this stage in my writing endeavors, I’m probably in the middle of aspiring and pro so I guess that makes me mean, petty, pretentious and obnoxious. That said, this is my favorite insult I spotted in the book this morning:

“That’s not writing; that’s typing.” -Capote on Kerouac

I think that can be said of many bloggers, and I certainly hope I’m not one. Time will tell.

And speaking of time and lapses in posting, I’m redesigning The Basis Point right now and coming out of the weekend with several new deals—lots of pre-holiday homebuyers here in San Francisco. So there may be a couple lapses here and there as I ready for 2012. But I’m glad you’re reading, and I’ll always continue writing.

It’s amazing the kinds of things that can come to you when  you spend a weekend alone with a three-year-old. See how lucky you are!

    Capote was such a bitch.
