THE BASIS POINT

Rocktober 28: Low Rider | War

My wife and I were dating five years before we had ‘our song’. And we’re definitely not ‘our song’ type of people. It happend by accident. We arrived at our friends’ wedding reception in San Diego early. The DJ’s tuning up and spins Low Rider, War’s funk rock masterpiece that hit number one in 1975. So we get down to it. We had to. We’re both from New Mexico, the only place with as many lowriders as War’s LA homeland. Turns out the video guy recorded us, and it went down in our—and our crew’s—history books as one of those magic moments. Low Rider is unmistakably cool, layered yet simple, and doesn’t lose its appeal. Just like my wife. So tonight, nine years later, I humbly offer this Rocktober pick to her.
