THE BASIS POINT

Does your career feel more secure as a freelancer or corporate soldier?

Big companies increasingly choose qualified consultants over employees to control fixed costs. You win this long game by packaging and selling your services well enough to create stability.

The gig economy is maturing, with 67% of contractors feeling more secure working independently, up from 32% a decade ago.

The same MBO Partners study showed 76% of contractors are “very satisfied” being independent, and 64% said independence was their choice, not because they were out of work.

Vox’s Rani Molla highlighted these stats in a piece about how employers are on board with the trend too, hiring more high-skilled, high-paid contractors.

I know this first hand, having spent the last 4.5 years building The Basis Point off this trend after 2 decades of being a good corporate soldier.

Big companies increasingly choose highly-qualified consultants over employees to control fixed costs. You win this long game by packaging and selling your services well enough to create stability.

I’m obviously on board with the trend, but I know not everyone agrees.

Check out Rani’s piece, and I’m also including other pieces below I’ve done on this trend.
