Friday Funk: Tachyon – The Rhythm Section

 
 

OK now that I’ve wrapped The 31 Days of Rocktober, the ratio of music to housing posts will skew back toward housing. But Friday Funk is an unstoppable force, so tonight’s installment is Tachyon by The Rhythm Section with Oakland sax man Sonny Simmons. This one randomly popped into my head Sunday night, and when I woke up Monday, username @Tachyon was following me on Stocktwits. Crazy. So this one is dedicated to him.

A tachyon is a particle that moves faster than the speed of light. The most famous tachyon is the recently discovered Higgs Boson, so if you want to get all deep, then go read up. If you just want to get your cool back for the weekend, then listen up…

    Tachyons are theoretical patricles which travel faster than light. The Higgs boson is a particle long theorized which had nearly dertainly been observed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The Higgs boson is not a tachyon. Higgs bosons permeate space.They are everywhere and they serve to give mass to any particle interactiung with the Higgs field. At critical temperature one theory suggests that the Higgs field become tachyonic through a process called tachyonic condensation. In tachyonic condensation a system can reduse its energy by spontaneously producing particles.

    Higga bosons are, apparently, real. Tachyons are theoretical and problematic to many theories in physics. Higgs bisons are not tachyons.

      thanks for the lesson. and for the benefit of other readers I’m sharing your additional rip on me via email for dabbling in an area that I know nothing about:

      “People who don’t know physics should not write shit about Higgs Bosons. And they sure as heck should not call them tachyons.

      Let me explain one point. According to the special theory of relativity, particles gain inertial mass (resistance to acceleration) at an infinite rate as they approach the velocity of light. Consequently no particle moving slower than the speed of light ever be accelerated so that it is subsequently moving faster than light. Tachyons are theoretical particles (with no evidence of their existence) which are “born” moving faster than light and consequently do not violate special relativity.”
