THE BASIS POINT

Job Openings Keep Increasing.

Initial Jobless Claims (week ended 11/7/2015)

– Initial Claims seasonally adjusted 276,000. Previous was 276,000
– Initial Claims unadjusted totaled 290,468 an increase of 32,178 from previous
– 4-week Moving Average   267,750. Previous was  262,750

Initial Claims are up slightly in the past two weeks but are trending much lower than they were in the two prior years.

JOLTS (September 2015)

– Job Openings   5,526,000. Previous was 5,377,000.

This is a continuing and frustrating fact:  Job Openings keep increasing but mot enough people have the skills to fill the openings. Some of this is due to the fact that people spend a lot of money on education but those educated and not educated for the jobs which exist.

The JOLTS report is the Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The headline number is job openings.
