THE BASIS POINT

Rocket acquiring moving companies now too?! Wait, that makes sense.

Rocket one-stop shop homebuying vision now adds moving services -- The Basis Point

Rocket today announced they’re buying 4 of America’s biggest moving companies: United Van Lines, Atlas Van Lines, Mayflower Transit, and Allied Van Lines. Rocket funded $51 billion* in mortgages to homebuyers in 2024, and the deal adds moving into a one-stop shop homebuying experience for those homebuyers.

This is one day after Rocket’s $9.4 billion deal to acquire America’s largest mortgage servicer, Mr. Cooper, which adds $1.56 trillion in mortgage servicing to Rocket’s $593 billion in servicing.

And it’s one month after Rocket’s $1.75 billion deal to acquire America’s top digital real estate brokerage, Redfin, which adds 50 million monthly online home search customers to Rocket’s 12 million.

Crazy, right?

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS’ DAY from The Basis Point!

BUT … it’s not crazy at all to integrate moving into a one-shop shop homebuying vision.

Moving is one of the biggest parts of the process for the 7.5 million people who will buy homes in 2025 (3.5m) and 2026 (4m)*.

Rocket’s Redfin and Mr. Cooper deals made me dig up these one-stop shop homebuying diagrams The Basis Point did in 2019.

In 2025, these one-stop shop concepts are more relevant than ever.

Have a look below and let me know your thoughts.

Also, would Rocket (and other firms building one-shop shop models) really buy moving companies?

Or is it better to buy moving referral sites like moveBuddha (where I got the top moving companies list)?

To me, the referral sites like moveBuddah or the much-bigger Porch make more sense — it would add value to customers, while augmenting customer acquisition strategy for a lender.

As a homebuyer, there are at least 9 providers you have to deal with, and while technology is starting to help bring this together, your general mood looks like this after you finally overcome fear of buying and actually enter the homebuying process.

Of course you want to shop for both lenders and realtors, but it’s exhausting, especially when you also need all these other services. So when lenders and realtors team up and bring it all together, you have to admit it’s a weight off. Today, some sophisticated lenders and real estate firms are able to bridge the relationship by offering their combined services to you with one technology experience. This way you’re all in it together, and it’s pretty seamless for you.

As lenders and realtors take their collaboration one step further, you’ll get more of a one-stop shop homebuying experience, either because lenders and realtors buy each other plus the other services to put them under one roof, or by keeping all services as separate entities but integrating them all into one experience with smart technology. Consumer protection laws (RESPA, mainly) have made it difficult to have it all under one roof, but dealmaking and technology progress are helping regulators understand this actually benefits you as a homebuyer. And even if all services aren’t under one roof, technology will continue to enable lenders and real estate firms to simplify all of this for you.
