Rocktober 14: Lost In The Supermarket – The Clash

Here’s a Twitter exchange Friday with my friend @bondosf. At 1:36 p.m. I asked him to text me a song pick for The 31 Days of Rocktober:

Exactly three minutes later he texted me this:

My suggestion for Rocktober: Lost In The Supermarket by The Clash. Seems very fitting for today’s world with people trying to save pennies where they can. The supermarket referred to in the song ironically was called The International. It was beneath the World’s End estate. Obviously the lyrics go deeper. Plus it’s my jukebox song 😉

This 1979 song off The Clash’s London Calling album, and @bondosf is right: the lyrics are about the spread of consumerism and the depersonalization of society. World’s End is an area of London that’s known as a counter culture epicenter. Mick Jones sung the song but Joe Strummer wrote it and he lived right around the corner from The International.

So to my friend and music consigliere @bondosf, someone I first met in a business context, let me just say: we’re living proof depersonalization isn’t taking over. Song’s still a good reminder though…
