Rocktober 3: Songs for the jobless

Yesterday’s Megadeth vs. Metallica was more about how a Megadeth song lyric led to a famous cocktail than it was about Metallica. So tonight The 31 Days of Rocktober continues with a Metallica tribute that has two listening comparisons for you to judge.

First is a comparison on two songs that start almost exactly the same and are precisely the same length: Metallica’s For Whom The Bell Tolls and AC/DC’s Hell’s Bells. Both are embedded side by side below, and both are hard rock fixtures. What’s your favorite?

Second is a redux of my Rocktober post last year comparing original vs. acoustic versions of Metallica’s Disposable Heroes—below left is 1986 studio original, below right is 2007 live acoustic. I’m doing it again because it’s a huge week for jobs data with payroll provider ADP today reporting +162k September payrolls, tomorrow’s weekly jobless claims expected at 370k, and Friday’s BLS September jobs report expected to show 120k nonfarm payrolls added to the economy (following +96k for August, +141k for July, +45k for June). The BLS report is also likely to show the needle hasn’t moved much on America’s 12.5m unemployed workers, plus another 8m forced into part time work because nothing else is available.

Both versions of Disposable Heroes are dedicated to them. May the creative force and breadth provide at least temporary respite. And here’s last year’s writeup about the song.
