How to get real about fintech valuations: should they trade like software or financial orgs?

Ansaf Kareem of Lightspeed Venture Partners did a great post last week on how to value fintech companies. He asked all the right questions, like:

– Can fintech companies trade like software assets?

– Or do they trade like legacy financial institutions?

– Do they have as many strategic buyers as traditional SaaS companies or do they attract a different kind of buyer?

Then he does a deep dive on valuation realities within fintech sub-sectors. He describes it all in detail and does two tables on valuations by sub-sector, one of which is above. The other is in Ansaf’s post linked below.

Fintech valuations spiked as these firms got $350b from VCs last 5yrs, and 312 became unicorns. But how do you value them correctly in 2023?
