THE BASIS POINT

Rocktober 15: Been Way Too Long – (new) Soundgarden

OK we’re now halfway through The 31 Days of Rocktober and you could argue that’s way too long to include a post about a new Soundgarden song released September 26. But these guys are way up on my favorite bands list, so I wanted to listen to Been Way Too Long enough to form an opinion before posting it. This song is true to their form on 1994’s critical and commercial monster album Superunknown. As such, I was somewhat disappointed when I first heard it, but then two things happened: (1) I realized that the rock greats stick to their formula, as I discussed on Rocktober 1, and (2) the song grew on me after a few listens.

This song is on King Animal, the band’s first album in 16 years, due out November 13.

Until then, here’s the new track, and below that I’m also posting Soundgarden’s first ever release in 1987, Hunted Down.

*If you want to get technical, they also released a single, Black Rain, in September 2010, but this song was mostly recorded during the Batmotorfinger sessions in 1991. This link will take you to a video for the song directed by Brendon Small, who created Metalocalypse, a cartoon (on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim) about Dethklok, a heavy metal band so popular they’re ranked as the seventh largest economy on earth—which by the way would go to the UK if ranked by nominal GDP or Australia if ranked by nominal GDP by capita. I may write about Dethklok later in Rocktober, since Small also actually created a band for the cartoon.
