Rocktober 6: Tristessa – Smashing Pumpkins

After working late Thursday, I got home just as my wife and kid were getting back from a run to the store to get a pumpkin. So naturally Rocktober will now offer up a pick from Smashing Pumpkins.

Going with their 1990 song Tristessa because it’s one of my favorites, and because it’s the song that put them on the map. It was their second-ever release, behind I Am One the same year, and led to a bidding war that got them their first record deal. Even though Tristessa was released by Sub Pop, the band got a better deal with Caroline Records and recorded their first album Gish in 1991 for $20,000. The band went on to sell almost 19m albums over their career.
